Engineering Manager – Express POS Checkout & Payments

About the role

SpotOn is looking for an Engineering Manager to lead the Express POS Checkout & Payments Experience team. The team owns the end‑to‑end checkout flows that restaurant operators, staff and guests use daily, including card and cash payments, split checks, tips, discounts, refunds and offline transactions.

Key responsibilities

• Lead a distributed engineering team of 6‑7 engineers and contractors across Poland and the US.
• Own execution of all checkout‑related flows, ensuring speed, reliability and payment accuracy.
• Partner with Product, Design and Financial Services to define and deliver customer‑centered checkout experiences.
• Guide architecture decisions for native Android (Kotlin/Java) and evolve backend services toward an event‑driven model using Kafka.
• Drive improvements in metrics such as checkout time, success rate, crash‑free sessions and incident frequency.
• Establish engineering discipline for testing, observability, incident readiness and production support.
• Act as incident commander for checkout‑related incidents and manage delivery risk.

Required profile

• 2+ years of experience directly managing software engineers, with a track record of coaching and talent development.
• Prior senior or staff‑level engineering experience, especially in native Android development.
• Proven ability to lead product‑focused teams across distributed time zones (US and Europe).
• Strong technical judgment and ability to make pragmatic architecture trade‑offs without being the primary hands‑on coder.

Required skills

• Kotlin and Java for native Android development.
• Android architecture and production debugging.
• Event‑driven architecture concepts and Kafka.
• Integration with Payments SDKs and understanding of payment flows.
• Observability, metrics‑driven performance tuning and incident response.
