Senior Backend Engineer

About the role

We’re looking for a Senior Backend Engineer with deep PHP expertise and strong Node.js skills to join the Enterprise API and Platform API Team. This new, hands‑on role focuses on evolving a large PHP monolith into modular, service‑oriented components while raising the bar for code quality, testing, and reliability. You will work in a remote‑first, globally distributed team, partnering closely with product, platform, and engineering colleagues.

Key responsibilities

• Develop a deep understanding of the existing PHP monolith and progressively extract it into modular, service‑oriented components.
• Design, build, and maintain scalable, testable, and reusable backend services in PHP and Node.js.
• Design and maintain robust RESTful and GraphQL APIs.
• Lead refactoring efforts that improve performance, readability, and long‑term maintainability of core systems.
• Build, deploy, and operate services on AWS, including Lambda and API Gateway.
• Write and maintain unit and integration tests to ensure reliability across releases.
• Critically review, validate, and improve AI‑generated code.
• Identify technical risks, bottlenecks, and opportunities for improvement across the platform.
• Communicate technical decisions and trade‑offs clearly in writing and through short video walkthroughs.

Required profile

• 5+ years of professional backend engineering experience.
• Expert‑level PHP experience on enterprise‑grade production systems.
• Strong backend experience with Node.js.
• Hands‑on experience refactoring or decomposing monolithic architectures into modular services.
• Strong background in API design (REST and GraphQL) and backend architecture.
• Experience with AWS, particularly Lambda and serverless patterns.
• Experience writing testable code and maintaining automated test suites.
• Experience using AI coding tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot, ChatGPT, Claude Code, Cursor) and critically reviewing AI‑generated code.
• Fluency in English, written and spoken.
• Highly proactive and self‑directed in a remote, async‑first environment.
